Dear Reader: What a beautiful day! The warmth of the sun grows stronger now, and it feels so good on my face. I am outside without a coat for the first time this spring, and I can get away with it a little while longer since the late afternoon rays have been heating up the deck nicely. The snow has melted here leaving the wood dry and warm, even in my sock feet. Below me, on the ground, is a different story. The big drifts piled there by the wind take weeks of mild weather to shrink, and though the ice has broken up, I can still see floes all the way to the horizon line. Winter hasn't quite left us yet.

On a day described by medalist Roddie Larson (more on her later) as "Hawaii on snow," snowshoers competiting in the 2007 USSSA National Championship saw bright blue sky, cloudless sun, and lots of snow. USSSA Executive Director, Mark Elmore, announced to the crowd gathered on the outdoor plaza of the Elm Creek Park Reserve's phenomenal chalet facility, "This has been the largest Nationals ever . . .and on a beautiful day."

I finally decided to try some new trails out at a ski area that catered to snowshoers and cross country skiers. I always snowshoe on trails in public places such as National Forests so this occasion was my first groomed trail experience. I had no expectations other than knowing that I had found another great place to stretch out and snowshoe!

Hood River is a place you might have heard of if you've traveled in Oregon. It's famous for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and the concerts at the Gorge Amphitheater. It's about half way between Washington's Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood. But "The Forgotten Mountain" - Mount Adams - is just to the north of the river. The area between the Columbia River and the mountain is a recreation lover's paradise. There's white water rafting, camping, fishing, mountain biking and, of course, snowshoeing.
